The Arm and Cubital Region Flashcards
What nerve/vein/artery does the anterior compartment of the arm contain? What do the muscles here do (generally)?
Contains: Musculocutaneous nerve, brachial artery/vein.
Muscles flex the glenohumeral and elbow joints, supinate the radioulnar joint
What nerve/artery/vein does the posterior compartment of the arm contain? What do the muscles here do (generally)?
Contains radial nerve, deep brachial artery/vein
Muscles here extend the glenohumeral and elbow joint
What is the cubital fossa? What are its boundaries?
Shallow depression anterior to elbow joint
Medial boundary: pronator teres
Laterally: brachioradialis
Superiorly: a line that connects medial/lateral epicondyles of humerus
What does the cubital fossa contain?
Tendon of biceps brachii
Brachial artery/vein
Proximal part of radial/ulnar arteries & veins
Median/radial nerves + lateral antebrachial cutaneous nerve
What is the bicipital aponeurosis?
Fascial extension of biceps brachii that forms the root of the fossa
(medial cubital vein crosses the fossa superficially)
What is the humeroulnar joint?
Articulation between trochlea of the humerus and trochlear notch of ulna
Hinge-type
What does the ulnar collateral ligament do?
Supports humeroulnar joint medially
Connects coronoid process and olecranon w/ medial epicondyle of humerus
What is the humeroradial joint?
Articulation between the capitullum of humerus and head of radius
Hinge-type
What does the radial (lateral) collateral ligament do?
Supports humeroradial joint laterally
Extends from lateral epicondyle of humerus to annular ligament of the radius
What movements take place at the humeroulnar and humeroradial joints? What muscles cause this?
Flexion: biceps brachii, brachialis, Brachioradialis
Extension: Triceps brachii
What divides the muscles of the arm into anterior and posterior compartments?
Brachial fascia
