Q

Who was the first disciple Jesus called when he began his ministry?

A

Andrew. (He lived in the shadow of his famous brother, Simon Peter. Andrew led Peter to Christ, then stepped into the background as his boisterous brother became a leader among the apostles and the early church.)

Q

Which disciple do we know the least about?

A

James, the son of Alphaeus (the less). Evidently he did not seek recognition or fame, for he received no glory or credit for his service to Christ.

One thing is for sure though, the Bible states each of these men gave up everything (family, friends, home, job, all things) to answer Christ’s call.

Q

Which disciple was characterized as tender-hearted, gentle man who displayed childlike humility? How do we know that?

A

Thaddeus (aka Jude). It is believed he wrote the book of Jude. The closing two verses contain a beautiful doxology, one of the finest expressions of praise to God in the entire NT.

Also, in Matt. 10:3, some manuscripts have Thaddeus, as “Lebbaeus called Thaddeus”, which means “heart” or “courage”.

Church traditions hold that he became a missionary to Edessa and was crucified there as a martyr.
