When Australia came of age as a nation, first chance to assert itself on the world stage and prove itself in theatre of war. Engraved in nations psyche, source of national pride.

Had to make trenches on stomach, hot summer, cold winter
Things such as open pit toilets and rotting corpses meant disease was rife
