The Ankle Flashcards
What maintains the Anterior stability of the Ankle?
Bone: Wide margin of the Talus
Static: Weak Joint Capsules
Dynamic: Anterior Compartment muscles & peroneus tertius
What maintains the Lateral Stability of the Ankle?
Bone: Lateral Maleolus
Static: ATFL, calcanealfibular lig and ft capsule (weak)
Dynamic: Peroneus brevis, proneus longue (very weak)
** This is why 80-85% of ankles sprains are on the lateral side ***
What maintains the Posterior Stability of the Ankle?
Bone: Nothing
Status: Weak posterior capsule
Dynamic: Very Strong Triceps Surae
What maintains the Medial Stability of the Ankle?
Bone: Medial Mallelus
Static: Deltoid lig.
Dynamic: Medial flexor group, tibialis anterior
** VERY strong stability - only 5% of sprains are on this side **
What are the two types of Pes Planus?
Functional - developed w/ time
Structural - born with it
Foot biomechanics of a heelplant
Subtalar jt is locked, foot is supinated, shock delivered up the calcaneus
Foot biomechanics of midstance
subtalar jt. unlocks, foot pronates, shock is absorbed
Foot biomechanics of toe off
subtalar jt locks again, foot supinates, provides rigid lever for propulsion
