What was the Heptarchy?
division of Britain into 7 independent kingdoms
Heptarchy comes from Ancient GreeK: “rule (archy) of seven (hepta)”
The seve kingdoms were: Northumbria, Mercia, Wessex, Sussex, Essex, Kent, East Anglia

When did Viking raids start?
8th-9th centuries
A raid is a short and violent expedition with the aimof stealing riches.
Most Viking raids had monasteries and their riches as their preferred targets.
Who were the Vikings?
raiders from modern Scandinavia (Denmark, Norway and Sweden)
“Viking” was not an ethnic group but the name of a profession.
Vikings were also known as the Danes.

the region of Britain under Viking control in the 10th century
It’s called Danelaw because people followed the law of the Vikings (Danes) instead of the law of the Anglo-Saxons
