Causes: Trade disruptions, conflict over land in Ohio Valley | Effects: Disaster for France, taxes on the colonists

Act
an action of a legislature (government) that creates a new law in writing (ex stamp act)
Boycott
To refuse to buy one or more goods from a certain source, an organized refusal by many people
Cash crop
A crop produced in large amounts to be sold and not just used by the farmer (ex tobacco and corn)
Militia
A small army made up of ordinary citizens who are trained to fight in an emergency (ex Lexington and Concord)
Representation
A method of having citizens have a say or role in their government
Tariff (also called a duty or import tax)
A tax imposed by the government on goods imported (bought) from another country (ex tea)
Excise tax
a tax on specific items - often items the government thinks are harmful or are considered luxury items (ex tea, alcohol)
tyranny
The unjust use of government power. A ruler who used power this way is called a tyrant (ex King George III)
