Why did alliance system develop?
A
- France lost Franco-Prussian War (paid reparations and gave up Alsace-Lorraine) so want revenge
- Germany faced encirclement making it vulnerable so Dreikaiserbund and Triple Alliance kept it safe
- Kaiser (Germany) dropped Russian alliance but kept Triple Alliance
- Russia allied with France meant Germany faces encirclement again
- Triple Entente meant by 1914 Europe divided, balance of power would keep peace
- Russia allied to Serbia, Romania and Bulgaria so 1914 alliances dragged the nation’s into war

- Dual Entente - Germany encircled

- Anglo Russian Entente - Britain and Russia had dominant roles in Persia and Afghanistan
- Triple Entente - Germany threatened by ‘ring of steel’
- Secret alliances caused mistrust
