Why did alliance system develop?

A
  • France lost Franco-Prussian War (paid reparations and gave up Alsace-Lorraine) so want revenge
  • Germany faced encirclement making it vulnerable so Dreikaiserbund and Triple Alliance kept it safe
  • Kaiser (Germany) dropped Russian alliance but kept Triple Alliance
  • Russia allied with France meant Germany faces encirclement again
  • Triple Entente meant by 1914 Europe divided, balance of power would keep peace
  • Russia allied to Serbia, Romania and Bulgaria so 1914 alliances dragged the nation’s into war

  • Dual Alliance isolated Russia
  • Triple Alliance - France angry at Italy for taking Tunisia
