The name of the wind that blows off of Africa into Spain. Satiago thinks it brings the sent of exotic woman and adventure
Maktub
An Arabic word meaning “written”
Moor
Spanish and European name for the Arabs that ruled Iberian peninsula for 500 years.
Personal Legend
A true desire, which comes from Soul of Universe “meant to do/be”. Alchemist is the story of Santiago realizing his Personal Legend
Sacristy
Room where the vestments of the church are kept
Sahara
The desert that runs the width of the African continent. Known for its size and harshness.
Scarab
A type of desert beetle which was sacred to the ancient Egyptians. Believed it symbolized sun and spiritual rebirth
Shear
To cut, specifically the wool of sheep
Simum
A wind of which blows through the desert destroying everything in its path. A very strong sand storm.
Soul of the World
Sometimes equated with gold a spiritual force that blinds all of us together and governs all things and speaks with us in omens.
Alchemy
The occult science which claims to be able to turn any common medal into gold
The Elixir of Life
Liquid portion of the Master Work, the goal of all Alchemist
The Master Work
The goal in alchemy “The Elixir of Life” and to the philosophers stone as a whole
The Philosophers Stone
Solid portion of the Master Work. Has the ability to turn metal into gold
Umim and Thummim
Two stones given to Santiago. One signifying yes the other no. Use when he cannot read the omens of the world
Zeal
Extreme enthusiasm can sometimes be used pejoratively in the case of calling one a “zerolot”
