The Air We Breathe Flashcards
What is an atom?
A small particle from which all substances are made.
Atoms are the basic building blocks of matter.
Define a compound.
Substance that can be split up into simpler substances, since it contains the atoms of two or more elements joined together.
Compounds have distinct properties different from the elements that compose them.
What is an element?
A simple substance, made up of only one type of atom.
Elements cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical means.
What characterizes a mixture?
Contains more than one substance with different types of particles that are not joined together.
Mixtures can be homogeneous or heterogeneous.
What is a molecule?
Two or more atoms joined together in a group of a set size.
Molecules can consist of the same or different types of atoms.
What is the periodic table?
A special list of all known elements.
The periodic table organizes elements based on their atomic number and properties.
Define pure substance.
A single substance that does not have anything else in it (rather than a mixture of substances).
Pure substances have uniform and definite composition.
