To protect society.
Why do Jews believe in punishment? (3)
The torah says that criminals should be punished.
The torah gives deterrence, protection and retribution as reasons for punishment.
Society would collapse if there was no punishment.
Why is punishment needed in society? Retribution
Criminals suffer in proportion to their crime.
They are more likely to reform.
Why is punishment needed in society? Deterrence.
If someone knows they will have their hand cut off they will not commit crimes. Lowers the possibility of crime.
Why is punishment needed in society? Protection.
If criminals are dead they’ll no longer threaten people and long sentences keep criminals out of society for ages.
