Andromeda was an innocent girl who was accused of hubris because her mother claimed she was more beautfull than a god. so she is chained to a rock to be eaten by a sea monster. Perseus finds her by accident just as the sea moster arrives….
How does ovid make the passage comical
He writes how when perseus sees andromeda he is so amazed by her beauty that he almost forgets to flap his wings
(“suas quatere est oblitus in aere pennas.”)
How does ovid portray the woman as innocent
- Her eyes streamed with tears (upset)
- She wouldnt talk or look at him at first to retain her dignity
How does ovid make the monster seem scary
- The monster roared (echoing off the sea type thing really loud)
- The sea is descibed as enormous to make the monster seem bigger
How is Andromeda portrayed as modest
- She doesnt look or talk to him as she is a virgin and she cannot talk to a man without a chaperone
- She attemps to cover hersef with tears to regain her modesty as her hands are tied
