Why did war occur in Europe?
Britain and France were appeasing Germany, and Germany was getting bolder. The Munich Pact was broken, since Hitler went and occupied territory in Czechoslovakia. This was the final straw for them.
What was the Phony War?
Occurred from 1939-1940. The Allies did not attack Germany for this time, even though they had declared war. Also, Hitler did not want to attack in the wintertime.
When did Hitler invade Western Europe and what tactics did he use?
In the spring of 1940, he used the Blitzkrieg method, which was used in WWI. He hugged the coat and went through lower countries to attack Paris.
What occurred in Dunkirk?
The British had moved their troops their on the coast. Hitler saw them and remained focused on getting France, so he allowed them to recuperate and regroup. This was his first major mistake. it would change the course of the war, because Germany could’ve destroyed the British right then and there.
What did Hitler divide France into after he took over?
Occupied France and Vichy France (which was its own nation)
Who ruled Vichy France?
Petain, he was a puppet for the Germans. he was later executed.
Who was De Gaulle and Free France?
They opposed the Germans and tried to undermine their war efforts.
What happened in the Battle of Britain?
germany wanted to get britain out off the war. Hitler began a campaign of airpower for 8 months were he would constantly bomb britain. they were defeated by the RAF (royal air force) hitler backed out of britain.
Who was winston churchill?
he became prime minister, was against appeasement
what was operation Barbarossa?
Hitler invaded the soviet union to get resources (second mistake). this caused the soviet union to join the allies

the russian winter that occured.

it was the tunring point of the war. hitler was driven back at the city stalingard.
What did Stalin ask the US?
He asked them to open up a second front in europe to take some of the pressure of the attacks off of the soviet union.

they fight back.
why does stalin get the brunt of the attacks?
the allies allowed this because they were scared of the spread of communism.

the first american victory agaisnt the japanese

island hopping. soldiers would invade and take over ket islnds to get closer and closer to japan. japan would not give up

the soviet agreed to join the war after it had ended. another justification was that the bombs were dropped so that japan would surrender before the soviet union invaded and got territory in asia.
