Why are the 4 D’s used?
To assess at what point an individual’s behaviour becomes so abnormal that it requires clinical diagnosis and possibly treatment
What are the 4 D’s?
Deviance, dysfunction, distress, danger
What is meant by deviance?
If the behaviour is ‘rare’ in society and deviates from the norm
What is meant by dysfunction?
If the behaviour is significantly interfering with a person’s life in a negative way
What is meant by distress?
If the behaviour is causing upset to the individual
What is meant by danger?
If the behaviour is a danger to the individual or others
Example of deviance
Being over familiar with strangers, talking to yourself in public, public nudity
Example of dysfunction
Insomnia, unable to work
Example of distress
Feeling like you can’t cope, relationship breakdown, very stressed
Example of danger
Suicidal thoughts, risk taking, violent behaviour
