What is a preliminary/thumbnail sketch?
A
Rough in nature and used to quickly communicate ideas and layouts

What are the benefits of preliminary sketches?
A
- Quick and easy to produce
- Can be quickly annotated to add information
- Cheap to produce
- Useful when communicating ideas to a client

What is a production drawing used for?
A
To provide accurate and detailed information to allow a product or component to be manufactured.

What are the benefits of production drawings?
A
- Can show how components are meant to be assembled
- Can be easily dimensioned
- Can be understood regardless of nationality or language
- Accurate and drawn to scale

What are the disadvantages of production drawings?
A
- Training is required to produce them
- Can be time consuming to produce
- Expensive equipment has to be bought to produce them

What are promotional drawings used for?
A
To advertise products. Can take the form of leaflets, posters or animations

What are the benefits to promotional drawings?
A
- Can show the customer what the product will look like
- Can be made to look attractive in order to sell the product
- Tend to be more easily understood than production drawings

What are the disadvantages to promotional drawings?
A
- Require skill and knowledge to produce
- Can give a false impression of the product
- You can’t physically handle a rendered model
