1st Amendment
-Protects
-Freedom of speech
➜Both spoken and written word (Petition and of the press)
-Freedom of religion
-Right to assemble (protest)
2nd Amendment
-Protects right to bear arms (own guns)
3rd Amendment
-Guarantees that the army cannot force homeowners to give them room and board.
4th Amendment
- Protects against “unreasonable searches and seizures”
- Police need PROBABLE CAUSE!
5th Amendment
- No double jeopardy-can not be charged twice for the same crime
- Don’t have to be a witness against yourself (“I plead the 5th!”)
- No punishment without DUE PROCESS
6th Amendment
-Guarantees a speedy trial, and impartial jury, and that the accused must be allowed to have a lawyer
8th Amendment
-Protects against “cruel and unusual punishments”
9th Amendment
-States that other rights aside from those listed may exist for the people, and just because they are not listed doesn’t mean they can’t be violated
10th Amendment
-Says that any power not granted to the federal government belongs to the states
