Swallow stages
- Prepatory - drooling, difficulty chewing
- Oral - impaired ability to form Bolus of food
- Pharyngeal - aspiration, reduced elevation of the larynx
- Oesophageal - reflux, regurgitation

Moderately thick liquidised
Can be drunk from a cup
Effort to drink through straw
Can’t be piped or molded
Can’t be eaten w fork
Can be eaten w spoon
No chewing
Smooth and no bits
Describe level 4
Puréed extremely thick
Can be eaten w fork but usually spoon is used
Can’t drink w cup or straw
No chewing
Can be piped layered molded
Can’t be pored
Falls offf spoon in single spoonful and maintains shape on plate
No lumps not sticky
Liquid doesn’t separate from solid
Describe level 5 minced + moist
CAn be eaten w fork or spoon
Can be scooped nd shaped on plate
Small lumps visible - paeds 2x8mm, adults 4x15mm
Lumps easy to squish w tongue
Describe 6 soft + bitesized
Can be eaten w fork spoon
Mashed w pressure from fork - don’t need knife to cut
Chewing required
Soft tender moist
Paediatric <8mm, adults <1.5cm
Thumb Nail blanches white when applying pressure
Don’t return to og shape when pressure released
