What are Anomalies?
The ways the text evoke unexpected or unique elements of human experience. Texts may reveal personal quirks which arise from an individuals personal experience which seem unlike our typified expectations of human experience
What are Paradoxes
The ways in which text evoke a contradiction or contrast within the human experience. For example, the human experience is paradoxical in the sense that moments of strength often grow and develop from personal weakness
What are inconsistencies?
The ways in which text unveil elements of human character which seem at odds with another. For examples, our love and devotion for another person may inconsistently give rise to possessive qualities or jealousy.
What should you focus on in your analysis?

Consider the emotive words being used and how these evoke the “human condition”
Define modality
Modality refers to an expression of definitiveness in a statement which conveys a level of certainty. Modality should be identified as either high or low
An example of this is “I was shocked to my core: the most gruesome, bloody rancid scene stood before my eyes” This is a high modality
Another example of low modality is “I was not so sure of what I was feeling. This sensation, this sense of being lost. I was confused” This is low modality as the narrators voice is uncertain
Define Emotive language
Emotive language is simply language which provokes an emotional response from the reader through its poignant representation of an emotional state of being. If a text clearly conveys language filled with Sadness, frustration anger or disgust label this as emotive language.
Define syntax
Syntax refers to the construction of sentences: their words, order and length. Consider both the placement of words in a sentence and the length of a sentence.
Example: “Elated, she threw the envelope into the air”
The placement of Elated following by the pause draws our attention to the emotional state of the protagonist
