Textiles Sustainability Flashcards
What are the six R’s
- Reduce
- Reuse
- Recycle
- Resell
- Repair
- Rethink
What does reduce mean in textiles sustainability
Reduce the amount of clothes you buy and reduce the amount of waste when manufacturing. Buy and sell locally
What does reuse mean in textiles
Reuse or repurpose clothes. Eg wrist warmers and hats from cashmere jumpers (Turtle Doves). Hand me down school uniform or QES second hand shop
What does recycle mean in textiles sustainablity?
Rather than throw used clothes and materials away, take them to a recycling facility
What does resell mean in textiles sustainability
Sell on your used or unwanted clothes. You get money for them, the buyer gets them cheaper than buying new. Common reselling sites are Vinted, EBay and Facebook Marketplace
What does repair mean in textiles sustainability?
Fix your clothes and materials rather than throwing them away. If you can sew yourself that is cheapest but you can take clothes to a clothing alteration store
What does rethink mean in textiles sustainability?
Reduce the environmental impact of the textiles industry e.g. design for fixing or reusing. Manufacture to reduce waste, source and sell locally, reduce the amount of water used in textiles production, encourage customers to buy less and use clothes longer. Eg Alpkit now have a clothing repair facility in their stores - e.g fit a new zip rather than buying a new coat
