Textbook of Modern Herbology - Chapter Four Flashcards
PLant Classification
Dicotyledons
Plants with two seed leaves in their embryo: Carrot, Rose, Grapes.
Monocotyledons
Plants with one single seed leaf in their embryo: Palm, Banana, Oats
How are plants distinguished from animals? (6 factors)
- They often Posses Chlorophyll.
- Almost all of them are fixed in one place.
- They have no nervous system.
- PLants grow continually throughout life and don’t have a certain shape or size in the adult phase in contrast to animals.
- They have rigid supporting cell walls containing cellulose.
- Most plats can synthesize their own food from inorganic matter.
What are the major groups that make up two-thirds of plants?
Flowering plants, Trees, Shrubs or Herbs.
What are the other minor groups that make up one-third of the plant kingdom?
Ferns, Mosses, Liverworts, Algae, Fungi.
What is the branch of biology concerned with the classification of organisms?
Taxonomy (From the Greek word Taxis meaning “Arrangement”.)
What is the order of classifying Organisms from more general to more specific divisions? (without the subgroups, 7 divisions)
Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species.
What is a species?
A species is a group of organisms that reproduce among themselves to give the same type of organism.
Who developed the Binomial system?
Swedish botanist, Carolos Linnaeus
what is a Gymnosperm /ˈjimnəˌspərm/ ?
PLants that from seeds in cones but not flowers or fruits. Mainly evergreens.
What does “naked” seeds mean?
Naked seeds are not enclosed in fruits.
What is an Angiosperm /ˈanjēəˌspərm/?
These plants form flowers and produce seeds enclosed in containers (fruits).
What are Thallophyta /ˈTHaləˌfīt/ and what four groups of plants do they include?
The Thallophyta are simple plants with no roots, stems, leaves, flowers, or seeds. They include Algae, Fungi, Bacteria, and Slime Mold.
What are Bryophyta /ˌbrīōˈfīdə/ and what two groups of the plants do they include?
The Bryophyta are plants with leaves and stems but no true root. The “roots” they have only serve as anchorage and is not considered true root because it lacks conductive tubes. This phylum includes The mosses and The liverworts.
What are the Pteridophyta /ˌterəˈdäfidə/ and what three plant groups do they include?
They are plants with roots, stems, leaves, and a water-conducting system that reproduce by means of spores. The ferns, The horsetails, and The clubmosses are included in this Phylum.
