a list of all the key words from a book along with each word’s definition, listed in alphabetical order
glossary
drawings that show the basic shape of the land and other geographical, political, or historical features

used to show where a new paragraph begins, draws attention to the new paragraph
indenting
divides the text into sections and tells the main idea of each section
subheading
organizes large amounts of information into a small space, presents data and includes calendars and maps
table
an alphabetical listing of the key names, terms, events, and topics in a book, along with the page number where they can be found
index
the line of text that tells us the author’s name
byline
allows you to compare information by giving you a visual picture of the data; they include: bar, line, and circle
graph
information that is written in list form with a symbol of some sort in front of each item
bulleted list
a drawing with labeled parts that explains or shows something
diagram
gives information in a visual way, usually includes a caption to explain what is being shown
photograph
tells the reader the topic of the text; shows the main idea and lets the reader know what they are about to read
