Text Book Pelvic And Sacral Readings Flashcards
What are common patient complains that require evaluation of the pelvis and sacrum?
Ab pain
Pelvic pain
Gysmenorrhea
Lower back pain
Urinary tract complaints
lower GI issues
Neuralgia of lower extremities
What does the the pelvic region oft he trunk include?
Bony pelvis
Pelvic cavity
Pelvic floor
perineum
The pubic symphysis
A fibrocartilagenous joint that holds both pubic rami together
Can rotate upon each other about a transverse axis
What are the three types of sacrums?
Type A: wide dorsally and narrow ventrally
Type B: wide ventrally and narrow dorsally
Types C: each side is equally wide
What muscles have direct attachments to the sacrotuberous ligament?
Biceps femoris (long head)
Piriformis
Gluteus Maximus
these muscles have direct influence on SIJ mobility and stability
What ligament and nerve are prone to damage/irritation in the presence of lumbosacral instability?
Iliolumbar ligament and nerve
Because of this the following can occur with pelvic instability:
- L4-5 transverse processes are tender
- referred pain tot he groin (similar to inguinal hernia pain)
What are 3 three true pelvic ligaments of the sacrum?
Anterior SI ligaments
Interosseous SI ligaments
Posterior SI ligaments
*true pelvic ligaments are ligaments that directly attach to the innominate to hold the sacrum in between both innominate
What muscle dysfunction can cause an anterior rotation oft he innominate or an inferior pubic shear?
Ipsilateral adductor muscles
Ipsilateral Rectus femoris
Ipsilateral Illiacus
What muscles are being engaged in a left/left and right/right sacral torsions?
Contracts
- contralateral hip internal rotators
- ipsilateral hip external rotators
Antagonizes
- contralateral piriformis muscle
How to memorize positioning for sacral torsions
A/B
A = side you will rotate the patient towards
B= side the patient will lie down on
Ex: left/right
- patient lies right lateral decubitus and rotates trunk left until motion at L5
