Tetonic Plates,Plate Boundaries and Margins Flashcards
What is a Tectonic Plate?
Tectonic Plates are the earth’s crust which is separated into 7 plates
What are the 7 types of Tectonic Plates?
The 7 types of Tectonic Plates are the African, Antarctic, Eurasian, Indo-Australian, North American, Pacific, and South American.
What are the three types of plate margins?
The three types of plates margins are the constructive plate margin, the conservative plate margin, and the convergent plate margins.
What is a Constructive plate margin?
A constructive plate margin is where two plates move away from each other e.g. The mid-Atlantic ridge. Magma rises from the mantle to fill the gap, cools, and creates a new crust.
What is a Conservative plate margin?
A conservative plate margin is where two plates are moving sideways past each other, or are moving in the same direction but at different speeds. e.g. Along the west coast of the USA crust is not created or destroyed.
What is a Convergent plate margin?
A convergent plate margin is where two plates move away from each other e.g. The Pacific Ring of Fire. At convergent plate boundaries, oceanic crust is often forced down into the mantle where it begins to melt. Magma rises into and through the other plate.
