Tests For Ions Flashcards
Colour of sodium in burner
Yellow
Colour of potassium in a burner
Lilac
Colour of calcium in burner
Red
Colour of barium in a burner
Green
Calcium + NaOH
White precipitate
Copper II 2+ and NaOH
Blue precipitate
Iron II 2+ and NaOH
Green precipitate
Iron 3 and NaOH
Brown
Aluminium and NaOH
White and then clear as it redid solves with excess NaOH form colourless solution
Mg and NaOH
White
Test for carbonate
Acid + carbonate bubbles off CO2 which makes limewater cloudy
Test for chloride/ bromide / iodide
Add dilute nitric acid then silver nitrate solution
Test for sulphate
Add HCl then barium chloride solution
If halide test is positive for chlorine
White precipitate - silver chloride
If halide test is positive for bromide
Cream - silver bromide
Halide test positive for iodide
Yellow precipitate - silver iodide
Temporary hard water
Hydrogen carbonate decomposes to make insoluble calcium carbonate - scale
Remove both hard water
1) sodium carbonate added and mg and ca ions react with carbonate ions - insoluble precipitate
2) ion exchange columns - switch mg or ca as water runs through with other ions such as sodium or hydrogen which they have a lot of.
Colour of lithium in burner
Crimson
