Tests for Carbonates using Hydrochloric Acid Flashcards
1
Q
How would you test for carbonates?
A
- Add dilute hydrochloric acid to the sample.
- Attach a delivery tube connecting the test tube containing the sample and a test tube containing limewater (calcium hydroxide, Ca(OH)2), and bubble the gas through limewater.
2
Q
What is the positive result when testing for carbonates?
A
Limewater turns cloudy
3
Q
Ionic equation for the reaction using carbonates and hydrochloric acid.
A
CO32-(aq) + 2H+(aq) —> CO2(aq) + H2O(l)
