Tests For Anions And Cations Flashcards
1
Q
Test for carbonates
A
Carbonate + acid = CO2
Add dilute nitric acid and if there’s bubbles, bubble through limewater
This goes cloudy in the presence of CO2
2
Q
Test for sulphate
A
BaSO4 forms white precipitate so add Barium2+ (aq) ions to test for a sulphate (barium nitrate)
3
Q
Halide tests (process)
A
Silver halides are insoluble so add nitric acid then silver nitrate
Ag+ + X- -> AgX (s)
4
Q
Halide test chloride ppt
A
White
Soluble in dilute NH3
5
Q
Bromide halide test ppt
A
Cream
Soluble in conc NH3
6
Q
Iodide halide test ppt
A
Yellow
Insoluble
7
Q
Order of anion tests
A
Carbonate, Sulfate, halide
8
Q
Test for ammonium ion
A
Warm gently with dilute NaOH
NH4+ + OH- -> NH3(g) + H2O
Presence of ammonia turns damp red litmus paper blue
