Tests by Week Flashcards
When is a chorionic villus sampling done?
10-12 weeks
What does chorionic villus sampling test for?
Genetic abnormalities like Down Syndrome, Tay-Sachs, or Cystic Fibrosis
What does the triple screen look for?
More specific genetic problems than chorionic villus sampling. More accurate, identify genetic problems like Downs and neural tube defects
When is the triple screen performed?
16-18 weeks
What three things does the “Triple Screen” detect
Alpha Fetal Protien, Beta hCG, and uE3
When is an amniocentesis performed?
15-20 weeks
How is an amniocentesis performed?
Use ultrasound to identify where fluid is around baby, take some with a needle for testing
What can an amniocentesis detect?
Genetic abnormalities, if lungs developed
When is the non-stress test performed? Why?
After 28 weeks (before 28 weeks, fetus not developed enough to respond to test)
What does the non-stress tests evaluate?
Oxygenation and CNS maturity
How are non-stress tests performed
Two sensors placed around mothers tummy- one to detect FHR and the other to monitor uterine activity.
What does a reactive non-stress test mean?
Reassuring- accelerations associated with fetal movement
What level blood glucose identifies a woman with gestational diabetes when doing a one hour glucose screen?
140 or above
If a woman’s blood glucose is between 130-140 after her one hour glucose screen, what will the physician reccomend?
A longer screen which requires fasting to determine if diabetic
How long does a glucose tolerance test take?
3 hours
When is a glucose tolerance test performed?
24-28 weeks
Why is a glucose tolerance test performed?
Done when one hour glucose screen is abnormal- used to identify gestational diabetes
How many samples of blood are required for a glucose tolerance test?
4- fasting, 1 hour, 2 hours, and 3 hours
When is an antibody screen performed?
26 weeks
Why is an antibody screen performed?
For women who have Rh- blood, or blood antibodies (need a small sample of mother’s blood to do this test)
When is a repeat cervical screen done?
34-36 weeks
Why is a repeat cervical screen done>
To check mother for chlamydia or gonorrhea, If infection is found, it can be treated before baby is born
How is a repeat cervical exam performed?
using cotton swab during pelvic exam
Why is an ultrasound performed in the first trimester?
Confirm presence of fetus, look for multiples, look for heartbeat, examine uterus/ovaries, estimate due date, and investigate any suspected problems
How long is the first trimester?
1-13 weeks
When is the second trimester?
14-26 weeks
Why is an ultrasound done in the second trimester?
look at baby’s growth and anatomy and estimate baby’s weight
When is the third trimester?
27-40 weeks
Why is an ultrasound done in the third trimester?
look at baby’s growth and estimate weight
When is a biophysical profile performed?
after 24 weeks
What does a biophysical profile include?
combines 5 ways of looking at newborn: nonstress test and ultrasound to look at baby’s breathing, body movements, muscle tone, and amount of amniotic fluid.
What is used to perform a biophysical profile?
Fetal monitor and ultrasound
When do you test for group beta strep?
34-36 weeks
How do you test for GBS?
A cotton swab is placed in the lower third of the vagina and around the anus.
What happens if a woman tests positive for GBS?
Have to have antibiotics during labor
