Tests Flashcards
The Rockwell Method- uses a minor and a major load to impact the material with an indenter.
Testing for hardness
The Brinell Method- applies a load from a penetrator, such as a steel ball or pointed object onto a smooth surface.
Testing for hardness
Vickers and Knoop- microhardness indenters, which are diamond shaped, both are examined under a microscope.
Testing for hardness
Bend testing- a test coupon is bent to 180° and outside portion is examined for defects.
Testing for soundness
Nick break- a test coupon is notched, then fractured, using both tensile forces and a hammer.
Testing for soundness
Fillet weld break test - a t-joint is hit with a hammer until there’s a fracture in the weld zone. The fractured area is checked for discontinuities.
Testing for soundness
Metallographic testing- a section of metal or weld is cut, polished, and examined under magnification.
