What is the test used to detect chlorine gas?
Chlorine bleaches damp blue litmus paper red first and then white.
What is the test used to detect oxygen gas?
Oxygen will relight a glowing splint
What is the test used to detect carbon dioxide gas?
Carbon dioxide will turn clear limewater into a cloudy white colour
What is the test used to detect hydrogen gas?
The squeaky pop test. A lit splint will emit a popping sound in the presence of hydrogen.
What is the test used to detect ammonia gas?
Ammonia turns damp red litmus paper blue.
Why, when testing for a gas using litmus paper, must the paper be damp?
So that the gas particles stick to the paper and are able to react with it. If it was dry, the litmus paper would not change color as the gas particles would slip off it.

Red
