test....particles Flashcards
What can you deduce about the electrons behaving like waves and the production of the bright rings by the electrons?
You can deduce that the production of bright rings suggests that constructive interference has taken place.
What can you deduce about electrons that are incident on a thin piece of graphite and produce a pattern?
The graphite acts like a diffraction grating, so the electrons undergo diffraction thus showing that the electrons are acting like waves.
Explain how the weak nuclear force operates, referencing an exchange particle.
The weak force acts using exchange particles, W+/ W- bosons, which allows the transfer of energy and momentum. When the electron emits/receives these exchange particles, the disappearance/ creation of new particles occur.
State what is meant by the wave-particle duality of electrons.
The phenomenon where electrons exhibit both wave like and particle like properties.
Can you give one example of each type of behaviour of electrons?
Wave like - diffraction
Particle like - deflection in a magnetic field
What is pair production?
When a high energy photon interacts with a nucleus and the energy of the photon is used to create a particle - anti particle.
What happens when an anti particle meets its particle?
They will annihilate and convert into two or more photons.
