Testing of Materials Flashcards
Describe X-Ray Testing
- It is a non-destructive test
- Done to determine if cavities are present
Describe Dye Penetrant Testing
- It is a non-destructive test
- Small cracks in the surface are found by placing a dye on the surface before applying a developer and examining the surface after cleaning.
Which Testing method uses ultrasonic pulses to determine if cavities are present?
Ultrasonic Testing, Non-Destructive
Describe Tensile Testing
- It is a destructive test
- Used to determine the tensile strength of the material being tested.
- Done by stretching the test piece and recording the load and extension.
Describe Compressive Testing
- It is a destructive test
- Used to determine the compressive strength of materials
- Test piece is compressed. The load and deformation are recorded.
Which Testing method is used to determine the performance of a material when undergoing bending and shear
Transverse, Destructive
Which Testing method determines how a material will cope with twisting forces (couples)
Torsion, Destructive
Describe the Brinell Test
- A hardened steel ball is forced into an object using a specific load
- The hardness value is determined by measuring the depth and surface area of the impression
Which hardness test forces a small square pyramid into a test piece under specified load conditions and what is it mainly used to test
- Vickers Test
- Thin metals as the loads are lower and the indentor is smaller
Describe the Rockwell test
A diamond cone is forced into a test piece under specified load conditions and a reading will be displayed on a dial
Describe the IZOD test
A method of impact testing. Test piece is held vertically at 1 end with the notch facing the impactor.
Describe the CHARPY test
A method of impact testing. Test piece is held horizontally at both ends with the notch facing away from the impactor.
