testing for presnce of sulphate ions. Flashcards
1
Q
reactions?
state an equation.
A
if there is a sulphate then awhite precipitate is formed as a result to barium sulphate forming.
other anions would give a negative result so no precipitate forms.
Ba2+ + SO42- -> Baso4
2
Q
why is HCL needed
state an equation
A
to react with carbonate impurities often in salts that form a white carbonate precipitate and gives a false result.
2HCl + Na2CO3 -> 2NaCl + H2O + CO2
( fizzing means carbon dioxide which is obsereved if a carbonate is present.
3
Q
why cant sulphuric acid be used?
A
contains sulphate ions so would give a false positive result
4
Q
what is in the reagent that i used to test for sulphate ions?
A
barium choloride acidifiied with HCL.
