Testing for ions Flashcards
Test for carbonate ions
Add an aqueous acid to the solution, if positive carbon dioxide gas will be produced. Test the gas by bubbling it through limewater, if positive the limewater will turn cloudy as calcium carbonate is formed.
Test for sulphate ions
Acidify the test solution with drops of hydrochloric acid. Add a few drops of barium chloride, if positive a white precipitate forms.
Test for ammonium ions
Add sodium hydroxide to the test solution. Warm the mixture. Test the gas with damp red litmus paper, if positive the red litmus paper will turn blue.
Test for halide ions
Add nitric acid, then add silver nitrate.
Chloride ions
White precipitate, dissolves in dilute ammonia
Bromide ions
Cream precipitate, dissolves in conc ammonia
Iodide ions
Yellow precipitate, does not dissolve in conc ammonia
