Testing for - ions Flashcards
what is group 7 called
halogens
what are group 7 ions called
halide
how do we test for halide ion
add HNO3 (nitric acid) and AgNO3 (silver nitrate) together.
then add the halide ion of your choice
what were the results for halide ions
Cl- formed a white precipitate (silver chloride)
Br- formed a creamy precipitate (silver bromide)
I- formed a yellow precipitate (silver iodide)
How do you test for sulfate ions
SO4(2-)
You add nitric acid and barium chloride to sulfate
what happens to sulfate when reacted
becomes a white precipitate of barium sulfate
how do you test for carbonate ions
CO3(2-)
carbonate ions react with acid to make CO2 gas
add nitric acid and see if CO2 bubbles off
you can add limewater to see if it goes cloudy
