Testing for Gases (Chemistry) 1 Flashcards
1
Q
Give the method used to test for Oxygen
A
- Light a splint.
- Blow splint out, so its glowing.
- Lower splint into test tube with suspected oxygen gas.
- If splint relights, oxygen is present.
2
Q
Give the method used to test for Hydrogen
A
- Light a splint.
- Place inside a test tube with suspected hydrogen gas.
- If splint gives a squeaky pop, Hydrogen is present.
3
Q
Give the method used to test for Chlorine
A
- Take a piece of blue litmus paper and add a few drops of distilled water so its slightly damp.
- Lower the litmus paper into the test tube with the suspected chlorine gas.
- If paper turns white, chlorine is present.
4
Q
Give the method used to test for Carbon Dioxide
A
- Add some limewater to a test tube.
- Bubble the unknown gas through the limewater.
- If carbon dioxide is present, limewater will go colorless to milky.
