Testing for Anions Flashcards
Test for carbonate (CO3²-) method
Add dilute acid
Test for carbonate (CO3²-) positive result
Effervescence, carbon dioxide produced
Test for chloride (Cl-) in solution
Acidify with dilute nitric acid, then add aqueous silver nitrate
Test for chloride (Cl-) positive result
White precipitate
Test for bromide (Br-) in solution
Acidify with dilute nitric acid, then add aqueous silver nitrate
Test for bromide (Br-) positive result
Cream precipitate
Test for iodide (I-) in solution
Acidify with dilute nitric acid, then add aqueous silver nitrate
Test for iodide (I-) positive result
yellow precipitate
Test for nitrate (NO3 -) in solution
Add aqueous sodium hydroxide, then aluminium foil; warm carefully
Test for nitrate (NO3 -) positive result
Ammonia produced
Test for sulfate (SO4²-) in solution
Acidify, then add aqueous barium nitrate
Test for sulfate (SO4²-) positive result
White precipitate
Test for sulfite (SO3²-)
Add dilute hydrochloric acid, warm gently and test for the presence of sulfur dioxide
Test for sulfite (SO3²-) positive result
Sulfur dioxide produced will turn acidified aqueous potassium manganate (VII) from purple to colourless
