Testing For Anions Flashcards
0
Q
Identify carbonate ions.
A
- add dilute acid
- if carbonate is present, we will see effervescence
- test if gas is CO2 by using limewater
1
Q
Identify chlorides, bromides, and iodides. (HALIDES)
A
- add equal vol of HNO3
- add AgNO3
- observe color
Chlorides: white precipitate
Bromides: cream precipitate
Iodides: pale yellow precipitate
2
Q
Identify nitrates.
A
TEST FOR AMMONIA
- put aqueous solution of unknown compound into test tube
- add NaOH and aluminum foil and warm gently
- test gas given off w damp red litmus
- if ammonia is present, litmus paper will turn blue
3
Q
Identify sulfates.
A
- put aqueous solution of unknown compound into test tube
- add equal vol of dilute HCl
- add barium salt (chloride/nitrate)
- if WHITE PRECIPITATE forms: compound is a sulfate
