testing for anions Flashcards
how do we test for carbonates
you first add dilute HCL and take any gas that is produced and run it through some lime water.
what does a positive test for carbonates look like
lime water turns into a cloudy color which means carbonates are present
how do we test for sulfates
we first add dilute HCL then we add our Barium chloride
why is it good to remove carbonates and sulfite ions with HCL in the Sulfate test
because they could also react with the barium to form a white precipitate which could confuse the results
what is a positive test result for Sulfates test
if sulfates are present we will end up with a white precipitate
how do we test for Halides
we first add dilute nitric acid, then we add silver nitrate
what are the three elements used in the Halides test
Chloride, Bromide, Iodide
what color precipitate does chloride give you when it reacts with silver nitrate and dilute nitric acid
White precipitate
what color precipitate does Bromide give you when it reacts with silver nitrate dilute nitric acid
Cream precipitate
what color precipitate does Iodide give you when it reacts with silver nitrate dilute nitric acid
Yellow precipitate
