Tenderness, redness, and warmth; scortal skin may be red and edematous
Presence of other infections: UTI
Diagnosing Orchitis
H and P
Urine and culture sensitivity
Orchitis treatment
Antibiotics
Aspiration of fluid - if hydrocele
Incision and drainage
Interventions for Orchitis
Bed rest Scrotal elevation - scrotal support Cold application Monitor for fever, pain , N/V Antibiotics Dressing change with NS or sterile water
Hydrocele
Abnormal fluid collection within layers of tunica vaginalis, which surrounds testes
May be unilateral or bilateral
Hydrocele may be secondary to…
epididymochitis
scrotal trauma
testicular cancer
hypoalbuminemia
Hydrocele is caused by…
increased production of fluid within scrotum, or decreased reabsorption of fluid
If there is an infection with a hydrocele…
it will be cloudy and contain bacteria
Clinical manifestations for a hydrocele
Swelling, pain and tenderness of testes, change in testes size
How do you diagnose a hydrocele?
Trans-illumination shows fluid collection in testes
Treatment for a hydrocele?
No treatment, usually just aspirate (hydrocelectomy)
Things to remember with a hydrocelectomy…
No strenuous or sexual activities for 4-6 weeks, or until cleared by radiology
Cryptochordism
Undescended testicles
Increases risk of testicular cancer
Usually treated at 6 months old, uses HCG
Spermatocele
Benign cystic accumulation of sperm that arises from head of epididymis
Asymptomatic typically
If pain, discomfort, or progressive enlargement is bothersome to pt, excision may be advised
