Q
  1. Iron and oxygen react to form rust. What will happen to the mass of the rust compared to the mass of the iron and oxygen before the reaction?
A

Mass cannot be lost, even when a chemical reaction happens. Matter is neither created or destroyed during a chemical change. (Law of Conservation of Matter)

Q
  1. Name one similarity between compounds and homogeneous mixtures and one difference.
A
  1. Compounds are pure substances and they are the same throughout. Since they are the same throughout it makes them a homogeneous mixture.
  2. Compounds are substances which can be formed by chemically combining two or more elements. A homogeneous mixture is substances formed by physically mixing two or more substances.

Q
  1. Explain how salt dissociates (dissolves) in water. Be specific.
A

Water is a polar substance. Since water is polar, it makes it a great solvent. A solvent is what is doing the dissolving. Polar has oppositely charged ends. Although the overall charge water is zero, it has a slightly negative side and a slightly positive side.
