Kingdom of Mali
1200-1500; this kingdom is a cultural assimilation. They copied another civilization and then improved on it. They have urban centers which are greatly populated. Much of the trans-Sahara trade in goods such as salt, gold, and slaves out of the town of Timbuktu ad passed through Jenne the capital.
Mansu Musa
1312-1347; Mansu is the title, musa is the name. The conqueror of Mali, he leads a hajii, a muslim pilgrimage to medina across the Sahara desert.
Songhai Empire
1350-1600; Replaces Mali, it picks up Islam culture and organizes very similar to Mali and earlier states. The capital is Gao on the Niger River the reader center of the empire. This empire is ore wealthier and wider culture spread, expanding in all directions.
Sunni Ali
1469-1492; Military commander for victories. He is considered great ruler of Songhai Empire. He took control of the Trans-Sahara trade routes and other cities of Mali.
Kingdom of Ethiopia
1137-1936; This is a preserved Christian faith and monarch. This kingdom has a variety of ideas, ruled by Negus. The Ethiopian Orthodox Church claims possession of the Ark of the Covenant.
Great Zimbabwe
1220-1450; Oldest and largest structures in Southern Africa. It’s a unique religious purpose for location. It is also the focal point for the African caravan trade.
Battle of Hastings
1066; part of the Norman conquest between the Norman french army of William, the duke of Normandy, and the english army under anglo-saxon king.
William the Conqueror
1066- 1087; Norman wins the Battle of Hastings under his ruling. He is names the conqueror. William brings royal power, feudalism, money manages, and new taxes.
Thomas a Becket
1100-1170; Archbishop of the Canterbury. The church accepts Thomas and he becomes more entitled to the Christian faith/community. His Best friend Henry II wants him to tax the church but he refuses. Henry’s army kills Thomas unexpectedly without Henry’s knowledge, so he kills the two men who killed Thomas.
Mamluks
969-1171; refer to the Muslim salves soldiers and muslim rulers of slave origin. They are a power group that rule themselves and are elite with the muslim army. They govern Egypt in the Abbasid World, who attract men all around the world.
Seljuks
1040; Turkish battleman/horseman that drive the buyids out and destroy their land. They have a strong military power and strong leader by the name of Sultan.
Battle of Manzikert
1071; This battle between the Seljuks and the Byzantines wasn’t supposed to happen. They suddenly crossed paths but the Byzantines weren’t as organized as the Seljuks. The Seljuks adapted more quickly, killing off the Byzantines and their Emperor.
Urban II
1095; A pope who wants to extend authority of church. He believes that if he helps the byzantines, that they will reunite with his church. He gives indulgences that say all sins are forgiven if the Muslims are destroyed.
First Crusade
1096-1099; The first number of Crusades to attempt to recapture the Holy Land, called by Pope Urban II.
Battle of Dorylaeum
1097; the battle with the Turks. Crusaders win by luck. They break through and take over Jerusalem in 1099 by killing everyone. They create “Latin States”
