The salon was an art exhibition in Paris. took about six weeks sponsored by the government and open to the public and would be free on certaindays.
Camera Obscura
Latin for a Darkroom. It is a primitive version of a camera. It works by light shining through a small hole which projects the image on a screen. this helped artists portray a 3d image in 2d
English Romanticism
Emphasised Imagination over reason and oneness with nature. It was a response to the industrialization of England. Romanticized painting of the English countryside. Artists like John Constable were famous for painting scenes where humans lived amongst nature.
Neoclassicism
Spurred by the Enlightenment the interest in the classics was revived. It incorporated the subjects and styles of ancient art. Jacques Louis David was a prominent painter in this style
Rococo
This art style was popular in the palace culture of Baroque France. It is differentiated by its soft lines depicting light-hearted scenes. Often picturing subjects such as cupid
Realism
Due to the enlightenment people began to embrace empiricism and it was reflected in the art. These paintings were characterised by their accuracy through close observation. Emphasis on science. Painted current scenes not historical scenes. Only paint what you see.
Impressionism
Popularized in France between 1800-1900. This style was known for its sketch-like quality, but with paint. It was committed to capturing snapshots of life. Popular subjects were Paris’s nightlife and land scapes.
Haussmannization of Paris
Complete renovation of Paris’s city center. Lasted for 20 years in the mid to late 1800s. widened the streets in hopes of making rebellions more difficult. A major object was also to beautify the city
Avant Gardsim
With growing dissonance towards societal norms across the globe, artist sought to create their own styles that challenged traditional artistic conventions. they saw them selves as leaders in the art world.
