Test-Tues Flashcards
what is the most common liquid around us
water
what is the basis of all life and why
water, because most things are made up of water.
what shapes the earths surface
water
what is a fundamental part of the life process
water
Where does water come from
Water comes from rain, rivers, springs, and boreholes.
What/who needs water to survive
Animals, plants, and people
where is water stored
tanks, reservoirs, and storage dams.
what can ater be used for
● To wash ourselves, our clothes, and our utensils.
● To transport people and cargo.
● To irrigate crops
● To cool machinery in factories and industries.
● To drink
● Some plants and animals live in water.
● We use water for recreation, e.g. swimming, diving, skiing, fishing, and surfing.
● To conduct religious rituals.
● To process and dilute waste products.
what is a drop of water made of
thousands of very small particles of water.
how are particles in steam, water and ice spread out
Particles in water are packed more tightly than
particles in steam, and they move slower. Particles in a solid are packed close together and
they do not move very much.
Name all 3 states of water
● Solid – ice
● Liquid – water
● Gas – steam/ water vapour
what cause a change in the state of water
A change of state in water is caused by a change in temperature.
what happens when water is cooled
it condenses and forms liquid
what happens when water is heated
it evaporates and creates water vapour
what speeds up the process of evaporation
Heat, wind, and a large surface area will speed up the rate of evaporation.
Water is always circulating in nature. This is called the………
hydrological cycle.
what is evaporation
when water is heated and forms water vapour
where does evaporation take place
Evaporation
takes place from all surfaces (e.g. streams, lakes, etc.)
what is transpiration
Transpiration is the process of water movement through a plant and its evaporation from aerial parts, such as leaves, stems and flowers.
what is transpiration
Transpiration is the process of water movement through a plant and its evaporation from aerial parts, such as leaves, stems and flowers.
Where does transpiration take place
transpiration takes place from all
plant life.
Ehat does condensation take the place of.
Condensation takes place in the form of
precipitation, such as rain, snow, sleet, and hail.
What is percolation
Percolation (soak-in) then takes place and
the water goes to the sub-soil, springs, and underground water supplies.
When we add sugar to our tea or coffee and stir it, the grains of sugar do not actually
disappear, even though we can no longer see or feel them. We say the sugar has…..
dissolved
what is soluble and insoluble
The substances that dissolve in water are said to be soluble. Substances that does not
dissolve in water are said to be insoluble.
what is one of the best solvents
water
how much in nature doesnt contain a solute
very little
what are the advantages of water as a solvent
Washing and cleansing,Flavouring of food,Medicine,Plant food and Aquatic life
what are the disavantages of water as a solvent
The fading of fabrics,Weathering,Leaching of soil, Brackish soil and Hard water
what is the solubility of a subject
The degree to which a
substance can dissolve in a liquid is called the solubility of the substance.
what does solubility depend on
The degree to which a
substance can dissolve in a liquid is called the solubility of the substance.
what is the rate of solution
the speed at wih the soultion dissolve is the rate of solution
what does the rate of solution depend on
stiirring, how fine the substance is and the tempreture of the solvent
what is a saturated soloution
when there is too much solute in the solvent,so it cant dissolve
what is an unsaturated solution
its where the solute can dissolve into the solvent
what is a solute
the substance dissolved into the solvent
what is solvent
the liquid in which the solute is dissolved into
what is polluted water
water with any impurities
how many impurities are there that can appear in water
3
name all 3 impurities that can appear in water
soluble impurities, insoluable impurities and living organisms
give examples of insoluable impurities
slit,mud,roots,oil and leaves
give exaples of soluable impurities
salts,acids and poison
how can soluable impurities be gotten rid of
disstilation by somthing called the liebig condenser
what is the purest form of water
distilled water
how is water is big dams purified
by tossing decent amounts of chlorine into it
how can insoluable impurities be gotten rid of
decanation and filtration
what is disstiled water used for
labs for mixing medicine and for in car batteries
how can living organisms be gotten rid of in water
sterilization
what is sterilization
its where u boil the impure water to get rid of all the impurities or treating it with chlorine
what is sedimentation
it is the process in which insoluable impurities settle at the bottom of the liquid to form sediment
what is decantation
it is the process in wich you pour the liquid slowly back into another beaker without pouring in any sediment
what is filtration
it is the process in which very fine insoluable solids can be separated from a liquid-solid mixture by passing it throuh suitable porous material like filter paper.
what do you call the liquid contained after filtration
the filtrate
what forms of water can be used to generate electricity or us
running water, falling water and water in the state of steam
We say water is a source….
of energy
what are water wheels
water wheels are wheels that are used mainly to drive slow machinery eg flour mills
what are the 2 types of water wheels
overshot and undershot
How does steam help generate electricity
Steam is used to power turbines and engines.Steam turbines are also used to
make the wheels of a steam train turn.
what happens in nuclear power stations
In Nuclear Power Stations a nuclear reaction creates energy which heats water to
produce steam to turn the turbines.
what happens in thermal power stations
In Thermal Power Stations, coal is burnt to heat water and produce steam. The
steam turns the turbines to produce electricity.
where is most of SA electricity produced.
Most of SA electricity is produced by
thermal power stations.
How does tidal power produce electricity
As the tide comes in there is a great deal of force which can be used to
turn water turbines. The water can be trapped behind the dam, and later turn the
turbine as it returns to the sea.
how does tidal power produce electricity
As the waves move up and down, the Salter’s Ducks wobble up and
down, and this movement can be used to make electricity.
name a couple ways you can conserve water in our homes
● Take shorter showers and use less water for bathing
● Don’t wash dishes more times in a day than necessary.
● Use cold water instead of hot water to rinse hands and dishes.
● Half-fill the basin rather than letting water run while you brush your teeth, shave, etc.
● Keep your swimming pool level low to reduce wastage from splashing.
● Rinse your car once, then wash using a bucket of soapy water, then rinse again.
● When cleaning your driveway, use a broom or rake to remove dirt and leaves,
instead of using water.
● Put a 2l plastic coke bottle filled with water in the cistern to reduce the water usage
per flush.
how can u re-use water
● Bath water is fine for watering the garden and lawn.
● When washing your car, used water is fine for chrome, hub-caps, and wheels.
● When back-washing your swimming pool, this water is fine for your lawn and garden.
● Bath water is also ideal for heavy cleaning jobs such as floors.
