Test Theories (Classic & Modern) Flashcards
What Does Classical test theory assume about total test scores?
That a total test score is made up of multiple items.
What do most classical approaches assume?
That a test score is made up of a Raw score (X) obtained by any individual is made up of their true component (T) and Random error (E).
How can you find an individual’s true score?
The true score can be found by adding the mean score to the error component (X = T + E). Where you are trying to find X, T is the mean of the sample and E is the Error (Standard Error of Measurement).
What is Item Response Theory (IRT)?
Focuses on the pattern of responses a person makes on a set of items. IRT does not assume that all items are parallel.
What does Classical Test Theory (CTT) focus on?
CTT focuses on a single score that one obtains on a test. It treats all items as if they are parallel.
What is IRT’s Foundational assumption?
IRT assumes that there is a linkage between responses to any item on a test and the characteristic being assessed by the test.
What is a latent trait in IRT?
A latent trait is the linkage between responses by an individual on a test and the characteristic the test is said to assess. The linkage is that the probability of a positive response to any single item on a test is a function of the individual’s level of the latent trait.
