Why did Hitler call for new elections soon after becoming Chancellor?
He hopes the Nazis can win more seats, so he doesn’t have to have the support of other political parties to change the Weimar Republic.
What was the Reichstag Fire and why was it convenient for the Nazis?
On 27 February 1933 Reichstag Building Burnt down. Marinus van der Lubbe (a communist) was caught at the scene. Then Hitler convinces President Hindenburg to issue the Reichstag Fire Decree giving Hitler emergency powers to fight the Communist threat.
How did the Reichstag Fire decree help the Nazis in March 1933 elections?
- 4,000 Communists were arrested 2. KPD is banned.
- Hitler abuses his Chancellor powers. Nazis harassed opposition parties by closing newspapers, office searching and rally disruption.
- 50 opposition leaders were murdered by SA.

What was the Enabling Act?
On March 23 1933 Hitler passed the Enabling Act allowing him to rule without the Reichstag’s approval. It also stated that laws enacted by the government, could differ from the constitution and bans all other political parties.
How did the Enabling Act get approved?
This gets passed because through vote rigging, intimidation and backroom deals Hitler secures the support of 83% of the Reichstag.

What was the Night of Long Knives?
The Night of Long Knives was when Hitler ordered the murder of 85 people suspected of dissent to show his authority was absolute. Also by killing SA leader Ernst Röhm, he stopped the Army-SA merger ideas and showing his belief in German purity.
How did President Hindenburg’s death help Hitler achieve total control over Germany?
On 2 August 1934, Hindenburg died. Hitler cancelled elections and held a referendum to approve his rule. Using propaganda and intimidation, 88% voted yes on 19 August. Only then did he assume the title of Führer. Soon after, the German Army swore unconditional loyalty to him.
