Massacre of 5,000-30,000 people. Crippled the Huguenot political movement because they lost most of their aristocrats

Born Catholic but raised protestant. Led protestant forces against the royal army. Barely escaped assassination during the St. Bartholomew’s day massacre.

Edict of Nantes
The Edict of Nantes, issued on 13 April 1598, by Henry IV of France, granted the Calvinist Protestants of France (also known as Huguenots) substantial rights in a nation still considered essentially Catholic. In the Edict, Henry aimed primarily to promote civil unity

Search for witchcraft throughout europe resulting in official trials. 40,000-60,000 killed. Often caused by mass hysteria

Argued for basic rights of men such as life liberty and pursuit of happiness. he argues that governments that fail to protect these rights can be replaced with new governments
