Aphorism
Is a brief statement that expresses a truth about life. Is usually one sentence long, and often humorous, pointed, or ironic. Thomas Paine The Crisis.
Allusion
Is a reference to a work of literature or to a person, place, or event outside of the piece of literature. Patrick Henry.
Metaphor
Is a figure of speech in which a word or phrase is applied to a person, idea, or object to which is not literally applicable. It is an implied analogy or unstated comparison which imaginatively identifies one thing with another.
Analogy
Is a point-by-point comparison between two dissimilar things for the purpose of clarifying the less familiar of the two subjects. Help readers to gain insight into difficult ideas and complex problems.
Rhetorical Question
A question that does not require an answer because the answer is obvious and does not need to be stated.
Anaphora
The deliberate repetition of words, phrases, or sentence, often at the beginnings of successive verses or paragraphs.
