disposable
intedned to be used once, or until no longer useful, and then thrown away; readily avaibale for the owner’s use;
art
the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typiclay in a visual form (painting sculatpure, ; the production of works to be apprectiated primarily for their beauty or emotional power
passive
accepting or allowing what happens, or what others do, without active response or resistance; submissive; unassertive; compliant; apathetic; flat; mindlessly obedient; asleep
Awareness
knowledge or perception of a situation or fact; well-informed interest in a particular situation or development; consciousness; realization; awake

responsible for putting the work onto film; infuses the film with spirit and meaning; the creative engine of the film; it is the director’s vision (or imagination) you see
producer
in charge of all the financial and administrative aspects of a film; salaries, contracts, production, distribution, and advertising
editor
sometimes called the “cutter”; responsible for the film’s final form; shapes and arranges the shots, scenes, and sequences
cinematorgraphy
photography of moving images; includes cameras, lenses, lighting, color, film stock, and techniques such as camera angle, positioning, and distance (cinematographer is synonymous with director of photography)
screenplay
the script of a movie, including dialogue, acting instructions, and scene directions
score
musical background written specifically for the film (usually instrumental)
shot
a concept for cinematography (an idea for filmed action)
take
single uninterrupted recording of a shot
cut
-instantaneous change from one shot to another
tracking shot
a shot in which the camera is mounted on a camera dolly or a wheeled platform that is pushed on rails while the camera is running; also known as a dolly shot or trucking shot
blocking
positions and movements of the actors
perspective
the “eye” or “window” the camera creates; hand-held shots, tripod (or dolly) shots, still shots are considerations when creating creative perspectives; unique possibilities are boundless
adaptation
work in one medium that derives its impulse from a work in a different medium; plays. short stories, novels, etc; film is a separate medium with its own aesthetics and techniques
set
artificially constructed place for a film (as opposed to on location)
camera operator
person who actually operates the movie camera, on the instructions of the director of photography
continuity
the act of keeping everything identical to allow for smooth transition between shots; poor continuity shatters the audiences’ illusion
long shot
- the name for a scene photographed from a long distance; also known as a wide-angle shot
over the shoulder shot
- an angle that typically includes the shoulder and the back of the head of one individual,
exterior
outside, often a recognizable building or location used to establish the illusion of a specific place
interior
inside
production designer
- responsible for design and physical appearance of the film;
art director
primary function is to support and follow through on visual concepts for the production as specified by production designer and director
sound editing
process by which sounds are sourced, created and captured; actual sound created for a filmed element (animals roaring; bombs exploding; wind howling; silverware clattering in a restaurant)
sound mixing
process of putting the sounds together for the film’s final track; the interlaying and balancing of all sounds, including dialogue and score
Gaffer
he head electrician; determines lighting requirements, and helps all electrical aspects of a production run smoothly; sometimes credited as chief lighting technician; works closely with the cinematographer; term probably originates from European carnivals, when people were in charge of “gaffing,” or herding, customers inside the tent; or, the use of a gaff to move overhead wires and lights
Best Boy
assistant to the gaffer, oversees the lighting crews, orders all necessary lighting equipment, keeps track of paperwork and schedules; term “best boy” probably originally referred to the fact that the person in that position was the “best” boy capable of keeping everyone else in line (think: foreman)
Grip
a technician who supervises all work except for electrical tasks; manipulates various equipment stands and sets up light-diffusing material in front of lamps; operate dollies and cranes; very hands-on workers; term originates from the necessity of “gripping” various pieces of equipment
casting director
works in conjunction with the producer or director; ferrets out appropriate talent; set ups meetings with the actors, agents, and producer/director, suggests and evaluates potential actors
