Oldest residents of MN, Founded living in the north and eastern woods in MN. Dominant group through the 1600s
Ojibwe
Moved came from the east to the west for food. Came to MN for the fur trade. Met Europeans about 1640
Battle of Shakopee
Final fight between the Dakota and the Ojibwe in 1858. Peace after, White settlers a bigger problem.
Kensington Runestone
Found in tree root describing trip by vikings MN in 1362. Some believe that this shows Vikings were here.
NW Passage
Water route to Asia through North America. Brought many explorers to MN.
Radisson and Grossiliers
In 1659, first Europeans to visit MN. Traded with the Dakota (Fur traders)
Duluth
French Solider and explorer. 1678 - Declared MN belonged to France.
Hennepin
1678 Belgian priest who came to convert Native Americans but was captured by them. Wrote Description of Louisiana, first book about MN.
French and Indian War
1750s (1754 to 1763). French and Indians Vs British. British won. French out of MN.
Johnathan Carver
Mapermaker of the NW Passage expedition trip; trip was cancelled. Travels through the Inner parts of North America in the years of 1766 thru 1768.
Grand Portage
Largest fur trade center in the world. July and August are the busiest months. Major jump off point for explorers. 1770s
American Revolution
1775 to 1783. Americans Vs British. Americans gained land to Mississippi River including parts of Minnesota.
Zebulon Pike
Born in 1779. Explored upper Mississippi River in 1805 and 1806. Possite sites for an American Fort. One of the sites where Fort Snelling ended up.
J. Snelling
Career Military Officer. Leader of effort to build Fort St Antony. Completed in 1825
Henry Schoolcraft
Failed glassmaker who was on expeditions looking for the source of the Mississippi River. Discovered in 1832 at Lake Itasca.
Ramsey Crooks
1787 American fur trader. MN business manager for JJ Astro
Selkirk Colony
1811 Scottish and Irish colonists settled Red River region. Pemina - First settlement in Minnesota.
Pond Brothers
1830s to the 1870s from CT around 1834. Missionaries, taught the Dakota about farming.
Stephan R Riggs
Ordained Minister. Wrote outlines of a plan to civilize the Dakota. Founded the Hazelwood Republic. 1830s (1837)
Pierre “Pigs Eye” Parrant
Late 1830s. Ran a tavern in newly opened land near Fort Snelling. Settlement around his tavern took his name, Was later changed to St Paul
Harriet Bishop
Vermont born teacher who came to Minnesota in 1847 with the National Border of Popular Education. Opened the first St Paul public school. Moved into Reform.
Stillwater Convention
An 1848 public meeting to discuss the statues of the MN Territory. Wrote a petition to congress and the president for early territory status. Henry Sibley selected an individual to deliver the petition to the congress.
Henry Sibley
Former fur trader who was instrumental to the creation of MN Territory. Became the first governor of MN in 1858
Alexander Ramsey
Pennsylvainia Whig; Former congressman from PA. First governor of MN by president Zachary Taylor. Served from 1849 to 1853.
James Madison Goodhue
Newspaper man who arrived in MN in 1848; Died in 1852. Editor of the Minnesota Pioneer. Advertised the benefits of moving to Minnesota which encouraged people to come.
Minnesota Enabling Act
An Act passed by the US Congress in 1857 that detailed the steps MN Territory had to take to become a state
