Captain Pierre Joseph Celoron de Bainville

A

June 5, 1749
Explores Ohio River Valley. Takes Silver/ Lead Planks bearing the French Arms, 14 officers, 200 Soldiers, and a Jesuit priest went up St. Lawrence to lake Ontario and Lake Erie making contact with Tribes. He would post the planks, but also bury them in case anyone tried to take them down, laying claims to Ohio River valley.
Concluded with “Indian Nation is ill disposed With French and they favor the English.”

A

Dinwiddie sends Major George Washington as a land surveyor to Ohio. GW offers to take message to French saying that they need to leave. Crosses Appalachian Mountains travelling to Fort La Beouf. GW is invited to stay for dinner and is told they won’t leave.

Washington makes it back from Fort La Beouf with information of a forts that the French intend to build (Fort Duquesne and Ft. Machault) Dinwiddie sends militia to build a fort before Duquesne is built, but he is too late. Militia sells tools to the French, and they use those to build Ft. Machault.

He also met with Jumonville who is the commander at Fort Duquesne . They have a disagreement and Jumonville is killed by Mingo Chief Tanaghrission. Fort Necessity is built for GW for safety

Brought back details of two French Fts that are to be built Ft. Duquesnes and Ft. Machault
Was sent back to stop it, but he was too late. Met a Mingo Chief who ends up killing a Jumonville. Frech react making GW retreat.
GW ends up signing a paper saying that he Murdered the French Commander. Mingo Chief was translator and thought it said he killed the man.
GW Starts French and Indian War.
