Test One Flashcards
What is induction?
Induction is the generation of electromotive force in a closed circuit by changing magnetic field
What did Nicola Tesla do?
In the early 1900s he played an key role in setting a precedent for how electrical energy would be supplied throughout the world
What is a period?
The time required to complete one cycle
What is frequency measured in?
Hertz
What is the peak voltage at a 120 volt receptacle?
170 volts
What does it mean to be in phase?
When two waves of the same frequency pass through their minimum and maximum values of like polarity at the same time
What are invisible lines of force called?
Lines of flux
Whenever an electric current flows through a conductor, what is formed?
A magnetic field
When does the saturation occur?
It occurs when all molecules in a material are lined up
Lenz Law states what?
An induced voltage or current opposes the motion that caused it
What are permanent magnets?
Permanent Magnets are magnets that do not require energy to maintain a magnetic field
Energy is required to create the magnetic field but not to maintain it
Where are the magnetic lines of flux closest together?
Where the magnetic field is strongest
What is permeability?
A measure of materials ability to become magnetized
What are three things needed for induction to take place?
A magnetic field
A conductor ( usually a coil)
Relative motion
What are three factors that determine the amount of induced voltage?
Number of turns of wire on the coils
The strength of magnetic field
Speed of cutting action
